St. Patrick School Bus Service Policy

St. Patrick is proud to own and run two school buses. State regulated capacity is 71 students. This number means 3 students per seat. We will take 71 students. We currently have an East Side Bus and West Side Bus. The dividing line is approximately 5th Street. Policy states that students who live outside District 303 and therefore have no bus service available to them, will be given priority over those who are within District 303 boundaries. The restriction for those outside District 303 is time. We must keep the bus run to approximately one hour. In keeping with these time constraints, we will still service as many students as possible. This means combining stops safely, and in some cases requiring students to be brought to the closest stop. Safety and time are our main concern, and will influence any individual decisions that need to be made. As often as we try to follow “first on, first off” policy, this cannot always happen. The reasons are:

  1. We need to keep the majority of the children off the bus the majority of the time. Some of the students live in rural areas, while many of them do not. We must service the majority while keeping the run at an hour.
  2. Also traffic build up occurs at certain times in certain locations. We must tailor the route to avoid these areas, as they add to the time of the run.

This too affects the “first on, first off” strategy. As you can see, many factors need to be considered to run our bus routes. Safety and time are the major determining factors as we set up the stops. Please also keep in mind the East and West routes are very different (urban vs. rural) so what works for one bus may not work for the other.
Note: Your individual request will be considered, but please remember the variables we must consider. There are two pay plans available.

  1. Children ride the bus both in the AM and the PM.
  2. Children ride the bus one way only (AM or PM).

Any change in riding schedule throughout the year must be confirmed in writing through the office. If your child will be having a friend ride the bus home with them – we must have the following.

  1. A note from the other child’s parent
  2. $4.00

Bring these to the office that morning. We hope this helps you understand how our decisions are made.
